This will be a little bit different. In this video we’ll be looking at the very first European muskets…15th century handgonnes.
This is a video that was made by my friend Alexander Spiridonov from St. Petersburg, Russia. Alexander is an engineer by profession, and an historian and black powder shooter. One of his major interests is 15th century material culture.
When he studied battle paintings, he noticed that soldiers were firing their handgonnes by holding it with both hands and aiming. Previous belief was that one hand held the gonne while the other hand applied a match to the priming.
Alexander’s research into this mystery lead to some interesting results.
Please listen to Alexander’s explanation, and watch his firing demonstrations. You will learn something…and be entertained in the bargain.
